What is the value of a bachelor's degree? What are some of the skills students gain in this program?
Earning a bachelor's degree is a great time for self-awareness. It's a safe place for you to explore lots of new things so you can figure out what you like and what you're good at—if you're lucky, those are the same things! After that, you build your credentials by learning everything your major program has to offer through coursework and meaningful experiences like research, internships, studying abroad and service projects.
Why did you start teaching?
My favorite part of working in biomedical research labs was always training other employees and mentoring new students. I was thrilled to be able to start teaching full time in 2010 at UHV. I love being part of a student's journey and can't imagine a more rewarding career.
What is the one book you think everyone should read?
"Homegoing" by Yaa Gyasi
Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students may not know.
I grew up on a small farm in south Texas with pigs, cows, chickens and lots of goats, so I love the outdoors. I've lived in Denver (skiing!) and Miami (south beach!). I'm a certified yoga instructor, mediator, lifeguard and water safety instructor. I love to garden and I bake almost every day.
